How To Improve Your Golf Swing Setup Mechanics
The starting point to improve your golf swing setup is your stance.
The standard positioning is when your feet are shoulder width apart, but you can vary this into a wider or narrower stance if that makes you more comfortable. With your woods, you may prefer a wider stance for body support and with your irons; your preference could be towards a narrow stance. Either adjust is fine. Just keep in mind that the wider the stance, the harder it will be for you to turn effectively and the more narrow the stance, the harder it can be to maintain your balance. Regardless, try to minimize your stance corrections to no more than the width of your foot from the even to shoulders recommendation.
When aligning yourself to the ball, try to always start with the golf ball in the middle of your stance, placed an equal distance from each foot. You may feel more comfortable making slight adjustments to this which is fine provided that these adjustments are limited to the width of the ball.
Once the ball is in position, try your best to stand straight up with your knees only slightly bent and your back straight. This will allow your spine to stay straight through the entire swing which is one of the keys to proper golf swing rotation. Failing to straighten your back at this point will reduce any effectiveness you can expect to have with your golf swing in terms of accuracy and power so regardless of how awkward this may feel at first, it’s important to stay with it and get it right.
To get the proper distance from the ball, hold your arms out straight while holding the golf club with elbows locked and lower the club to the ground, bending only at the hips. Once the golf club touches the ground, move yourself backward or forward to get the club positioned parallel to the ball. Remember to keep your back straight and only bend at the hips.

The key is to stick with your set up drill so that all aspects of the set up are repeated properly every time before you take a swing.
