Golf Swing Drills For Better Driving
Before starting to any golf swing drills that are meant to improve your driving ability including accuracy and distance, make sure you have a basic understanding of how the golf swing changes from using irons to woods.
With an iron, you are trying to hit down at the wall in order to get under it and deliver the loft and spin you desire from the shot. Hitting down on the ball in the same fashion is definitely not the approach to take when swinging a driver so you’re going to need to change your set up to the golf ball for the bigger clubs.
The good news is that the change in set up from irons to drivers is pretty easy to accomplish.
Start with your normal golf swing set up routine where your arms are straight out from your body and you bend at the hips to bring the golf club in line with the ball, all the time keeping your back straight. To get rid of the hitting down effect, you need to flatten out your swing a bit and this is done by standing up a bit straighter and reaching a bit further with your arms. You’re only after about 1 to 3 inches of movement with your chest going slightly backwards, but this will be just enough to change your golf swing rotation for proper ball to driver contact.
The key here is to leave absolutely everything else exactly the same and only move your back and arms to create the additional reach to the ball. Your lower body is already correctly positioned to the ball, so there is no need to move it, letting the adjustment come from your upper body.
The mechanical result will be a small change in your golf swing plain whereby your golf swing will become slightly more horizontal the more you straighten your back and stance. Now you're ready to swing the driver remembering all the while that nothing else has changed in your golf swing mechanics.
This slight adjustment can have an enormous impact on the resulting shot, so play around with the amount of change you make in your stance to see what consistently generates the best results and what’s most comfortable to you.
After performing some golf swing drills with your driver, you should notice a change in results and the more you can make the set up correction repeatable, the more solid contact your going to be making with the golf ball.
