From Good Golf Swing To Great

The definition of a good golf swing is obviously going to vary from person to person and what’s considered good or good enough for one golfer may more resemble a bad golf swing to another.

So let’s first get some perspective and work from these different points of view.  For high handicap golfers who feel they’re doing all right with their game, but definitely want to try and keep improving, a good golf swing is about taking the complexity out of what their trying to master now, and get back to a more fundamental approach.  There is a good chance that every time they go to practice something new or incorporate a new wrinkle into their swing, they are actually building off a base of bad or wrong fundamentals which will likely yield poor results and wasted golf swing training timing.

By going more basic and simplifying the golf swing, they’re more likely to see almost immediate results, especially in the short game where a simplified golf swing can generate results you didn’t think were possible without years of time wasting practice and frustration.

For the lower handicap golfer, who is already doing a number of things correctly but their own golf swing analysis would suggest they still have not reached their own definition of a good golf swing, simpler is still better.  With the more intermediate to advanced golfer, improvement comes from building on what they already have by simplifying certain elements of their golf swing and strengthening the fundamentals that they’re weakest at, or don’t spend any time addressing.

In this day and age of the quick fix solutions like golf swing aids, golf swing software, golf swing simulators and so on, players forget to focus on the core fundamentals that have been around and worked for decades.  The key message here is that simple basic changes to what you’re already doing will yield the best results the fastest, not the next great golf training system, or some new golf swing technique someone came up with to sell to the rabid golfing market.
Too often golf turns into a complex set of turns and twists that don’t generate the results you’re looking for.

In reality, the path to better results is always going to be the same.  It starts with a good set up position, then moves to developing a solid and sound grip, and ends with the golf swing process.  None of this is new, but it still works.  Sometimes in our quest to find short cuts and work arounds, we end up with greater complexity than if we just kept with the tried and true.
