How To Fix Your Golf Swing Slice

To fix your golf swing slice, you have to be prepared to look more closely at the mechanics of the shot and break it down into pieces so that its easier to wrap your head around the problem and then effectively work on correcting it.

Also, remember that the golf ball actually serves as a feedback loop and analysis tool to you in that the actual flight of the golf ball will determine your level of improvement.  If the ball is still slicing in a similar manner, then the changes you're trying to make are not addressing the problems in your overall golf swing.  While this may seem obvious, many golfers can get overly focused on what their trying to correct without paying attention to the result. 

One last thing to consider with measurement is remember that improvement in a bad golf swing can come in a matter of degrees.  So just because you're still hitting a slice, doen't mean you're not improving if the degree of the slice has been reduced.

The other feedback mechanism to pay attention to is the damage done on the ground.  If you're a right handed golfer, the divot produced with a golf slice tends to go hard to the left which shows how the impact with the ball created the spin that caused it to go off to the right of target.

The primary areas to focus on when trying to fix a golf swing slice is your stance, grip, and swing.

One the biggest problems with a golfer's stance than generates a slice is setting up off target where your mind is hitting in one direction, but your body is pointing in another.  Make sure that you body position is perpendicular to where you're aiming.  To check your stance for proper set up, lay a club on the ground, aim it at the target, and make sure your body is standing parallel to it.  If you're still not sure you're in proper alignment, get someone to stand behind you to see if everything is pointing in the right direction.

While the grip can vary tremendously from player to player and still be proper, there are some typical aspect of your grip that you should pay attention to when correcting a slice.  Make sure that even though you have the club face aligned squarely with the target, that your hands are square to your body.  A slice from a right handed golfer may be the result of your hands holding the club off center to the left. The more square your hands are to your shoulders, the less likely they will contribute to a slicing motion.

The last major area of golf swing slice correction is the actual golf swing.  Here most of the problems relating to a slice are caused in the backswing, more specifically a high and flat backswing and a twisting of the club in the hands during the back swing.

The backswing needs to maintain the proper curve versus being more straight up and down during golf swing rotation around the body.  This can be corrected by paying more attention to where the golf club travels during the back swing and to make sure its going more over your shoulder than your head.

The other area to wathout for in the backswing is the twisting of the wrists which opens up the club face. Once again, using the example of a right handed golfer, if you can keep your left wrist straight through the swing, your club face will stay closed and not generate a slicing action.
